5.0 out of 5 stars Muchos monstruos en un gran box set

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Horror!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 December 2019
I grew up in the '80s and '90s watching so many classic horror films. At the time, I always loved the more recent films like Nightmare on Elm St, The Fly, The Thing and so on. But I also grew quite a love for the classic '50 scifi and Hammer films. The one thing I never saw much of as a kid and was always considered quite a treat was when there was a Universal film on the television. Seeing the greats like Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi was something I looked forward to and to now have them here in one box is a dream come true.

In terms of quality and class, nothing could ever beat the original Universal Monster movies (though, Hammer did a great job at trying). Equipped with so many great characters like Dracula, Frankenstein's Monster, The Invisible Man etc, this film series has always been something that I (and many others) have cherished. From great set pieces, incredible special effects for the time and fantastic intimidating bad guys, these now ancient films are still a blast to watch. They're so unique by today's standards that it's hard not to fall in love with them. Especially when compared to what is considered "Horror" by modern standards.

Each one of the classic Universal films are now collected and packaged into this tremendous box-set titled, Universal Classic Monsters: Complete 30-Film Collection. It's a hefty little product featuring all the Universal Monster movies in one large box. Each monster gets its own hard plastic case housing multiple discs, all of which are held together in a reasonably strong cardboard sleeve. These are the same collections you can buy separately through Amazon etc, some of which I think are now out of print (looking at you Dracula). It's a fine looking collection to own. It isn't large by any means and certainly has no weight to it. It looks good on the shelf next to others films.

There'd really be no need to go through each one of these films, especially considering how many there are in the box-set. What I will say is that these films have all been very well looked after and cleaned up to incredible standards. Considering the oldest films in the box are nearing one hundred years old and have barely a mark on the film print. The image for the films are clean, crisp and have a lot of depth to them. I think anyone seeing these films for a first time or haven't seen any in a while, will be very surprised at just how good these films look. They're fine evidence that good old black and white can be gorgeous to look at.

As for sound, well it's typical to expect less than perfect quality. The dialogue and soundtracks are a bit hit or miss being quite grainy and coarse in places. Some of the older films are a little more worse for wear but considering the technological limitations of the time, I'm not going to pass judgement. You can only do so much with 90 year old audio tracks and it's a miracle that they sound as good as they do. Especially when you consider the poor treatment films from the '60s etc have received by comparison.

If you're planning on buying any of the Universal Monsters box-sets, I recommend forking out for the whole series. There are so many great films in this box that it is hard to not justify getting it all in one go. Sure, you may end up with a few duplicates but it's a more tactful purchase overall. It's also worth noting for people in the UK etc this US box-set most certainly works on Region B bluray players. I bought mine from Amazon.com and haven't had any issues whatsoever. I would happily say that this is one of the finest box-sets I own and I couldn't recommend it more.
